Synonym: 'Blue Streak.' A breathtaking combination of ice-blue and dark
indigo, these tall, sturdy wands of color stand out brilliantly in the sunny
border. Gentian Speedwell typically gives you pale blue blooms, but this
bicolor delight is both more floriferous and more colorful. No wonder it won a
2008 Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society! The foliage
is low and neat, arranged in a rosette that remains tidy and attractive long
past bloomtime. The blooms arise on thick, rigid stems of amber-brown,
crowding along the stems that reach straight up, then often tilt at the tip.
Expect the first blooms in late spring, continuing through early summer. Cut
the flowers promptly for arrangements indoors or deadhead them as soon as they
pass; this will encourage new bud production on this terrifically floriferous
plant.
