There are about 55 species of evergreen and semi-evergreen perennials in this
genus. They are indigenous to North America and Mexico. They will produce
clumps of scalloped leaves which are often tinted bronze or purple. The
flowers produced are held aloft on tall thin stalks with dainty nodding,
white, crimson or pink bell-shaped flower panicles. Makes good ground cover.
Fully to frost hardy. Prefers semi-shade and moisture-retentive but well
drained soil. Propagate species by seed in autumn or by division in autumn or
spring, cultivars by division in autumn or spring using young, outer portions
