Miscanthus sinensis 'Ferner Osten' is a wonderful grass to use for late season interest with its red-tinged flowers glistening in the low autumn sun. Rather than planting them in a border on their own we prefer to use grasses through mixed plantings where their dynamic qualities can be really highlighted and made the most of. We have used Miscanthus sinensis 'Ferner Osten' in flowing, informal drifts in a new mixed planting which is adjacent to The Shrub Rose Border, in the Hilltop Garden at Hyde Hall. Here it mingles fantastically well with late flowering perennials such as Echinacea purpurea 'Rubinstern' and Anemone hupehensis 'Hadspen Abundance'. |
